LIGHTING APPLICATION: MUSEUM LIGHTING

HOTA Gallery, Gold Coast

HOTA Gallery is an iconic Gold Coast destination where art, entertainment, culture and lifestyle meet. Spread across six levels, HOTA Gallery comprises over 2,000 square metres of exhibition space, hosting the City of Gold Coast’s extensive collection of art and cultural artefacts, and a diverse mix of large, international touring exhibitions, smaller displays and temporary exhibitions.

Designed by ARM Architects, HOTA Gallery incorporates a highly considered lighting strategy, designed by Electrolight, which seeks to create a textural, engaging and inviting visual effect across internal and external environments. A series of dynamic lighting effects aim to engage the public, while respectfully highlighting connections between the gallery’s architecture, interiors, hard and soft landscaping, fostering balance between elements.

Throughout HOTA’s gallery spaces, iGuzinni custom View Track Lights provide flexible, high-quality general illumination. With 360-degree rotation and the ability to sit in any location along the track, the fittings can be reconfigured to suit a multitude of gallery arrangements. Quality optics enhance the characteristics of the exhibited works, while ensuring a high level of visual comfort for visitors.

The gallery’s ceiling tracks also accommodate a series of custom Palco Framer luminaires, designed to frame artworks with a wash of light. The fitting’s ability to adjust and shape the light beam allows the lighting effect to be tailored to the unique requirements of the work, with shapers creating square, rectangular or circular geometries with variable focus sizes. A dimmable, electronic ballast is integrated into the fittings, allowing light levels to be adjusted to suit the artworks and the desired atmosphere of the exhibition.

Both iGuzzini’s View Track Lights and Palco Framer lights are fitted with Casambi, Bluetooth-enabled connectivity, delivering an enhanced level of control. With the ability to create individual addressing, time scheduling, occupancy-based scenes, conservation-based time exposure and dynamic dimming, the Casambi system allows for flexibility and future-proofing to suit the technical demands of hosting cutting-edge, international exhibitions.

HOTA Gallery’s lighting strategy is intentionally restrained yet highly technical, ensuring the exhibition artworks take centre stage, set against the lively character of ARM’s architecture. Lighting is carefully managed by the gallery to foster a flexible and imaginative gallery experience, eliciting memorable spatial encounters for new and returning visitors.
